SUPERHUMANS: lighting for Superhumans

medicine

Superhumans is a rehabilitation center for Ukrainian military personnel and civilians who have sustained injuries as a result of the war. The main goal of the project was to create a lighting environment that meets medical requirements while also supporting the psychological recovery of people with severe physical injuries and traumatic experiences. The center’s mission is not only treatment, but helping patients return to life physically and emotionally strengthened.

The lighting concept is based on a clear spatial division according to functions and patients’ conditions. Warm white light is used in patient rooms, corridors and lounge areas, creating a calm, almost home-like atmosphere. It reduces the sense of a clinical environment and supports emotional comfort.

In treatment and operating rooms, neutral white light is applied to ensure visual clarity and precision for medical staff, while avoiding additional strain for patients.

The entrance space is designed according to a hospitality logic rather than a clinical one. Concealed light sources create soft, diffused illumination that gently welcomes patients and visitors without overwhelming the heightened sensitivity often present during recovery from trauma.

From the very first moments, the space communicates respect for the individual, their dignity and their needs.

The technical solutions focus on visual comfort. Luminaires with minimal glare are used throughout all spaces, as patients recovering from injuries and prolonged treatment often have increased sensitivity to bright light. Lighting control systems automatically adjust light levels throughout the day, supporting natural circadian rhythms that are essential for quality sleep and recovery.

Special attention is given to the discharge areas. These transitional spaces use light to create a calm and supportive atmosphere, helping individuals internally prepare for their return to everyday life. Here, lighting both acknowledges the journey already taken and gently sets the tone for the next stage.
