Jam Factory Art Center – when lights tell stories

public spaces

After eight years of revitalization, Jam Factory Art Center opened its doors in Lviv and immediately became a cultural anchor for the Pidzamche district. The former factory, carefully preserving its industrial aesthetic, has been transformed into a powerful institution of contemporary art. The project’s founder, Austrian historian Harald Binder, saw in this building a new cultural opportunity.

The facade as the cover, the interior as the narrative

We approached the building as an art book. The classical façade is its cover. It is illuminated using a floodlighting method without interfering with the architecture — as a gesture of respect for its heritage. The interior becomes the narrative, unfolding through the dynamics of light: lighting invites, intrigues and creates the atmosphere for an artistic experience.

Lighting scenarios that live with the space

At Jam Factory, lighting is not an addition but part of the communication. It responds to events and shapes the atmosphere:

  • Classic (everyday)
  • National (state holidays)
  • Exhibition (opening of exhibitions)
  • Festive (Christmas, Easter)
  • Together (the colors of Ukraine and Austria as a symbol of partnership)

These scenarios are implemented through RGBW floodlights: thanks to the additional white channel, the system can flexibly combine warm and cool tones.

Black Box — a contemporary chapter in an old book

The glass cube of the new architecture is illuminated with colored markers, creating a visual bridge between classic and contemporary elements. The entire lighting system is automated and integrated into a smart building system, allowing it to be controlled from a tablet.

Engineering with character

For the facade lighting, we developed custom carpentry solutions: niches in the wooden window sills with integrated luminaires. They feature quick-release mounting for convenient maintenance — preserving the aesthetics while improving functionality.

Jam Factory Art Center is an artistic art book in space. From the cover to the final page, everything works toward one goal: giving people an experience that changes them forever.
